Chicago Style Steppin is yet another
way of expressing one’s self. You might even call it living art and it is
breathtaking to watch!
I was once advised to avoid eye contact
during the dance because the eyes are the
window into the soul and it is the place where deception is most likely to
occur. One could mistake the connection for something more; an invitation for a
drink, sex, date or even, dare I say, a long-term relationship?
Whether you are attracted to his sexy
knob-toe or roach-killer shoes or the backless dress revealing the dimpled
small of her back. Or, maybe it’s one of your favorite tunes which cause you to
lose yourself in the swerve of her hips and the way he uses his fingers tips to
guide you into a spin where you can show him “what you working with”. Whatever it is that attracts your attention,
steppin is like a drug or addiction!
The world of Chicago Style Steppin is
where lifestyles collide. People from all walks of life converge into the
melting pot of dance. The two-bit hustler, drug dealer, moto-ryder, wanna-be, gold-digger is integrated with
the lawyer, doctor, nurse, accountant, engineer, business owner, and
entrepreneur seeking to elevate their dance as well as their status.
Steppin is the drug which intoxicates
while creating the illusion that you are living on top of the world! Steppin disguises your faults, short-comings, and imperfections while enabling the impersonation
of an outgoing, extroverted, sociable, gregarious, genial, affable, friendly,
and unreserved smooth operator or heavy hitter.
He’s spent endless hours learning the
count, memorizing the basics, manipulating the lane, and perfecting his leading
ability in order to maintain control; looking good and on point is the ultimate
goal.
She spends undocumented amounts of
money on her hair, nails, outfit, and shoes, hoping that her look will impact
her moves. She’s nailed the basics and she knows her count, managing her
footwork for when he rolls her out.
Together they create the glow of a
connected steppin duo on the dance floor. But if she follows his lead and he
makes her look good, steppin in sync, it
becomes well understood; that they command attention for their moves is no
doubt, shining bright like a diamond is what it’s all about.

When the dance is over or at the end of
the night every single stepper’s hoping for a drink or an invite. To continue
the dance in vertical or horizontal position, sometimes steppin is only about attention and recognition.
When its’ all said and done, there are
some important points to remember:
ü It’s
only a dance
ü All
is not as it seems
ü He’s
married and she has a man
ü She’s
broke and he just wants some azz
ü It’s
about sharing the art of dance and freedom of expression
ü Nothing
last forever
Wikipedia states Chicago Style Steppin has leveled off, I say it’s the art form that does not require short-lived mainstream or mass media
attention. The underground is where classic art forms like Steppin, lives eternally! - CeleXy
